The German Cinema Melbourne film festival screens at Backlot Studios from November 17-25. The festival will screen 11 films, all but one are Australian premiers. The opening night film is Gordian Maugg’s Fritz Lang, a speculative drama about the famed German filmmaker as he attempts to shoot his first sound film M in Berlin, and his obsession with a serial killer at the time. The festival closes with Destiny, a restored print of Lang’s 1921 masterpiece. There is a mix of dramas, documentaries and comedies in the carefully curated selection of films. Greg spoke to the festival’s artistic director Peter Krausz to find out more about the festival, the choice of films and the challenges in establishing a new film festival in a crowded film festival calendar.
