Promised is a new Australian film that about arranged marriage, a practice that was quite common amongst Italian immigrants in post-WWII Australia. In 1953, two young Italian children are promised in marriage by their fathers. Twenty-one years on – despite changing times, fading traditions and 70’s liberation – the pair are expected to marry, or face the consequences. The film stars Paul Mercurio and Tina Arena. It was written and directed by first time feature film maker Nick Conidi. Greg speaks to Nick about the making of the film, the casting and the universal appeal of the film, which was the hit of the recent Italian Film Festival.
