Happy Christmas is the latest film from independent filmmaker Joe Swanberg, one of the darlings of the “mumblecore” movement, whose films often centre around real-life, believable characters and situations. His films provide some insights into human nature and are truthful and at times painful. His films are often minimalist in style and structure, have an improvised look and feel, and much of the dialogue has been improvised on the set, giving it a natural and unforced feel. As with most of his films, the action is confined to a couple of locations and interiors but Swanberg makes the most of his low rent aesthetics.
For his Movies At Dusk program Greg spoke to director Joe Swanberg.
