BOOKWORM – interview with ANT TIMPSON
By GREG KING
In this family friendly drama from New Zealand filmmaker Ant Timpson, an 11-year-old girl named Mildred finds her world turned upside down when her estranged father, the washed-up magician Strawn Wise, comes to look after her while her mother is in hospital. He reluctantly agrees to take her camping to find a mythological beast known as the Canterbury Panther for the $50,000 reward offered for finding proof of its existence. But at its heart Bookworm is the story of a complicated father/daughter relationship. The film stars Elijah Wood (from the Lord Of The Rings trilogy) and relative newcomer Nell Fisher. Timpson is better known for his work with gory and weird horror and fantasy films. Greg spoke to Ant about his career in the film industry, the genesis of this project, his collaboration with writer Toby Harvard, working with Elijah, casting Nell.
