In the documentary Big In Japan, Melbourne filmmaking trio Lachlan McLeod (director), Louis Dai (editor) and David Elliot-Jones explore the nature of fame and the culture of fame, in a world where Facebook and YouTube can make instant celebrities. The trio journeyed to Japan, where the people seem to worship foreign talents. The title itself refers to the phenomenon of Western fame in Japan. The three filmmakers embark on a mission to see if they can make Dave – a 26-year old nobody – famous. The film was four years in the making. Greg spoke to David and Louis to find out more about the challenges of shooting the film in Japan and the nature of fame.
