The American Essentials Film Festival screens at Kino Cinemas from May 10 and runs through until May 20. The festival screens some of the latest and best films from America’s independent film scene, and the films are chosen straight from some of the US’s top film festivals like Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca. The opening night film is the quirky romantic comedy The Boy Downstairs from director Sophie Brooks. There is a sidebar called Postcards From LA, featuring some classics like Chinatown, Shampoo and Michael Mann’s crime thriller Heat. And there is a special screening of Gotti, starring John Travolta as the notorious New York mobster, a role he was born to play. Greg spoke to the festival’s artistic director Richard Sowada to find out more about what’s on offer.
