Dysfunctional family gatherings are a popular subgenre that filmmakers like to explore as they are full of tension, conflicts, secrets and unresolved issues that simmer to the surface, and Christmas gatherings seem even more fraught. The Australian comedy/drama A Savage Christmas taps into this genre. It is the feature film directorial debut for Madeleine Dyer, and features Gary Sweet and Rachel Griffiths in supporting roles. Greg spoke to Madeleine about writing the film, developing the characters, the cast and shooting in Queensland.
